ABOUT THE MIDWEST FISH & WILDLIFE CONFERENCE

Final Conference Report new

2007 will mark the 68th year that that natural resource professionals have met to share new research information, management experiences, and valuable insights of fish and wildlife research and management.

The Conference theme is “Be The Change: Manage Locally, Conserve Globally”. What we do locally on our individual fish and wildlife properties or on private lands in our own states can and will have an effect on Midwest regional fish and wildlife populations and their habitat. We are inviting attendees to explore ways to put their individual management actions into a larger context to benefit all fish and wildlife across the Midwest.

STUDENT SECTION
The conference in Madison will afford both graduate and undergraduate students a lot of opportunities. As emerging wildlife and fisheries biologists you’ll hear about current Midwest research findings and emerging issues as well as making important professional contacts (i.e., schmoozing), but beyond that there are a number of opportunities designed specifically for students. We have also set up a place where students can connect. Are you a networking newbie, want to ask others in your boat for some advice? Then this is the place for you.

Manage Locally Conserve Globally™

CALL FOR CONTRIBUTED PAPERS AND POSTERS

Deadline: August 31, 2007
The Midwest Fish and Wildlife Conference will hold its 68th Annual Conference in Madison, Wisconsin, December 9-12, 2007. The meeting will include workshops, symposia, contributed papers (oral presentations), and contributed posters. We invite submission of contributed papers and posters on topics of fish and wildlife science, management, conservation, education, or policy within the broad theme of Manage Locally and Conserve Globally. Abstracts will be made available on the website but Proceedings will not be published, so we encourage reports from the author's most recent scientific investigations and management experiences.

Papers and posters from completed studies or significant results from completed phases of long-term projects will be given priority. Acceptance of papers and posters from work still in progress will be dependent on the quality of the abstract and space availability. Papers and posters will be accepted based on their technical merit and contribution to our knowledge of species, populations, communities, ecological processes, management practices, conservation initiatives, education models, or policy issues. Please note presentations from students are welcome but are not given preferential treatment during review. Through past experience we have found that students do as well as professionals under the review process. However time/space is a limiting factor and we may not be able to accept all papers/posters submitted (whether from students or professionals).

PAPERS
All contributed papers (oral presentations) will be scheduled for 20 minutes, which includes 15 minutes for the presentation and 5 minutes for questions. A limited number of oral presentations may be included with symposia if the subject matter is appropriate and there is available space in the symposia session. Oral presentations are limited to Microsoft PowerPoint; no other formats (such as slides, overheads, or video) will be accepted.

POSTERS
We urge participants to consider presentation of their work as posters. Posters provide an opportunity for authors to participate in more detailed communication with attendees. Posters are displayed for either a half or full day (do we know days and times yet? If so I would put these in) and authors are requested to attend their posters during scheduled breaks. Posters will be displayed on horizontal cloth-covered boards 4-ft. high x 8-ft. wide.

INSTRUCTIONS FOR SUBMITTING ABSTRACTS
Submit an abstract according to instructions at our abstract submission website Writing an abstract in a word processing program and using the copy and paste tool is an easy way to submit your information. The submission deadline is August 31, 2007 at Midnight CDT.

Highlights for preparing abstracts are listed on our abstract submission website to aid in preparing your abstract. You will have the option of submitting the body of your abstract (maximum 2000 characters) either by typing directly into the space provided or inserting text from a Word file. Abstracts should include a statement of objectives, brief description of methods, principal results, and conclusions and/or management recommendations. Include scientific names in the abstract but not in the paper/poster title. Title (and the short title) should clearly describe what the paper will present. Do not abbreviate place names (e.g. state or country) in the paper/poster title. Do not include paper/poster title or author information in the abstract. This information must be entered in the spaces provided on the site. You will be notified that your abstract was received and saved.

STUDENTS
There will be awards given for the best student paper and best student poster. If you are interested in having your paper or poster judged, check the box for paper/poster judging.

NOTICE OF ABSTRACT ACCEPTANCE
Notice of acceptance will be made by October 1, 2007.

REGISTRATION
All presenters MUST register and pay the appropriate conference registration fee. Advance registration is strongly recommended. Registration information will be posted in mid May.
