ABOUT THE MIDWEST FISH & WILDLIFE CONFERENCE

2007 will mark the 68^th year that that natural resource professionals have met to share new research information, management experiences, and valuable insights of fish and wildlife research and management.

The Conference theme is “Be The Change: Manage Locally, Conserve Globally”. What we do locally on our individual fish and wildlife properties or on private lands in our own states can and will have an effect on Midwest regional fish and wildlife populations and their habitat. We are inviting attendees to explore ways to put their individual management actions into a larger context to benefit all fish and wildlife across the Midwest.

Final Conference Report new

AFS T-SHIRTS @ TRADE SHOW?!?
As you know by now there will be NO JUNK! at this conference. However if you are a closet "junk fiend" then have we got an offer for you.
There is a rumor that T-Shirts may be sold at the conference in Madison. Shirts could be available at the AFS booth in the trade show area. But, if you are not planning on attending the trade show or don’t know someone who is, you can always contact Steve Gilbert day or night to arrange a purchase.

STUDENT SECTION
The conference in Madison will afford both graduate and undergraduate students a lot of opportunities. As emerging wildlife and fisheries biologists you’ll hear about current Midwest research findings and emerging issues as well as making important professional contacts (i.e., schmoozing), but beyond that there are a number of opportunities designed specifically for students. We have also set up a place where students can connect. Are you a networking newbie, want to ask others in your boat for some advice? Then this is the place for you.

Call For Papers & Posters

The Midwest Fish and Wildlife Conference invites submission of contributed papers and posters on topics of fish and wildlife science, management, conservation, education, or policy within the broad theme of Manage Locally and Conserve Globally. Abstracts will be made available on the website but Proceedings will not be published, so we encourage reports from the author's most recent scientific investigations and management experiences.

Papers and posters from completed studies or significant results from completed phases of long-term projects will be given priority. Acceptance of papers and posters from work still in progress will be dependent on the quality of the abstract and space availability. Papers and posters will be accepted based on their technical merit and contribution to our knowledge of species, populations, communities, ecological processes, management practices, conservation initiatives, education models, or policy issues. Please note presentations from students are welcome but are not given preferential treatment during review. Through past experience we have found that students do as well as professionals under the review process. However time/space is a limiting factor and we may not be able to accept all papers/posters submitted (whether from students or professionals).

News from the Local Arrangements Chair

NEW! Request a Room for an Auxiliary Meetings or Social Event

The Midwest Fish & Wildlife Conference planning committee is committed to setting an example for meeting attendees and other conference organizers by the way we conduct this event. Some things we’re doing to make this event more resource friendly:

No junk! No abstracts CD (they’ll be available online, and free wireless will be provided at the conference center), no meeting bag (we assume you have one), no t-shirt (it wouldn’t keep you warm enough, anyway), no giveaways of things that will clutter your life. Please see the Survival Guide so that you’re equipped for the meeting!

Locally produced food- as much as possible, we are pushing the Monona Terrace to buy food from responsible local producers; we think you’ll be surprised by and pleased with our menu! Smart buying and healthy food will be better for everyone, including our finned and furred friends, than a lame give/ throw-away.

Power for the conference will be provided from renewable sources.

Our meeting purchases are made with responsible manufacturing in mind first, price second. The secondary costs of cheap goods are an insidious onslaught on the resources we work hard to protect.

We hope you appreciate these efforts, and find this meeting as comfortable, warm, and exciting as the meetings you’ve come to expect from Wisconsin hosts.

By now you know we won’t be giving you “stuff,” so here’s a checklist of things you can bring to Be the Change!

A bag or backpack to carry things

As part of its effort to make the Midwest Fish & Wildlife Conference a less wasteful event, the planning committee decided that it would not have a registration gift- no pen, no canvas bag, no CDs, basically nothing that will end up as clutter on its way to landfill.

We recognize that people really like getting new things, even if they didn’t need them, and that many of us regularly use swag gathered at various meetings. The question is- how many tote bags, AFS pens, and TWS leather portfolios does a person need? You’ll have to be the judge of that, but if you find that you’ve got extras in your office, Do we have an idea for you!

Meeting participants- please bring meeting paraphernalia you’re not using to the first ever Midwest Fish & Wildlife Conference Swag Swap! We’ll take pens, pencils, highlighters, canvas bags, duffels, water bottles, portfolios- anything in decent condition with an agency/ university/ meeting logo that you want to give away. In this way, students and forgetful professionals will have a place to grab precious meeting loot, and we won’t be contributing to the clutter in your life! Leftover items will be donated to local charitable organizations.
